The explosion at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine in 1986 was the worst disaster modern society has seen. Thousands of people were displaced from their homes and exposed to potentially deadly levels of radiation. And almost twenty years later the effects of that exposure are still being felt. Thyroid cancer and leukemia are rampant and birth defects are common.
