The Documentary Channel Slates Encore Telecasts of Genesis Award Nominee “Blinders,” Which Examines New York City’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Tradition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 26, 2009) — The Documentary Channel® (DOC) has scheduled exclusive encore telecasts and online streaming of the Donny Moss film “Blinders,” after the documentary was recently nominated for a Genesis Award by the Humane Society of the United States. “Blinders,” which first made its U.S. television premiere on DOC on Oct. 27, 2008, documents the realities surrounding one of New York City’s most infamous and controversial traditions: horse-drawn carriages in midtown Manhattan.

The 23rd Annual Genesis Awards, to be presented March 28 in Beverly Hills, Calif., recognize media representatives whose talents and journalistic integrity have raised awareness of animal issues. Nominees and winners range from those who work in the print media, to the writers, directors and producers of feature films and television.

“I’m so grateful to be nominated for a Genesis Award at a time the content of my film is the subject of a major debate in New York City,” says filmmaker Moss, whose film was one of four nominees in the TV Documentary category.  “Now even more people will be able to tune into The Documentary Channel and be exposed to the gruesome truth behind the tradition of New York City’s horse and buggy trade.”

In recognition of the film’s nomination, DOC has scheduled four encore telecasts of “Blinders” over the next two months.  DOC is available on DISH Network (Channel 197), and several broadcast stations in major markets including NYC TV (Channel 25) throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.  The following is the network’s schedule of additional “Blinders” telecast dates:

    • Monday, March 9 10 a.m. ET
    • Friday, March 27 7 p.m. ET
    • Monday, April 20 10 p.m. ET
    • Saturday, April 25 6 p.m. ET

In addition to future telecasts, DOC will make “Blinders” available to online audiences in its entirety on the network’s exclusive Sling.com channel.  The specific link to the film is as follows: http://beta.sling.com/video/show/120848/06/Blinders.

In “Blinders,” carriage operators say that horse-drawn carriages should stay because they are a cherished symbol of New York City that brings in tourist dollars. On the other hand, advocates for animals and equine experts say that horse-drawn carriages cannot be operated humanely or safely in the congested streets of New York City (and should be replaced with eco-friendly electric antique cars). Through original footage taken with hidden cameras and interviews with carriage drivers, equine experts, accident witnesses, animal rights activists, politicians, tourists, and people who have rescued spent carriage horses from slaughter, “Blinders” takes viewers behind the scenes to expose the truth behind the tradition.

The Documentary Channel (DOC) is the USA’s first 24-hour television network exclusively devoted to documentary films and the independent documentary filmmaker, providing viewers with round-the-clock opportunities to see fascinating, eclectic and award-winning documentary films of all lengths and genres.  Headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., with offices in New York and Los Angeles, DOC was founded by Oscar®-nominated and Emmy®-winning documentary filmmaker Tom Neff (CEO) in January 2006.  DOC now reaches over 21 million homes nationwide via DISH Network (Channel 197) and several broadcast stations in major television markets, including NYC TV (Channel 25) throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.  DOC also provides content to online distribution outlets through www.youtube.com/documentarychannel and www.sling.com/network/189/The-Documentary-Channel.  For more information on DOC, visit www.documentarychannel.com.
