The Faces of Tenncare

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Recently we premiered filmmaker Molly Secour’s powerful short doc “The Faces Of Tenncare” here on the channel. At just under 15 minutes in length the film packs an emotionally powerful punch. I spoke to Molly earlier today and she told me of the?Ǭ† strong responses she had begun to receive from folks who had lost their Tenncare and was even kind enough to send over a few quotes from the emails and letter’s she’s received. So just to give you an idea of the kinds of things folks have said here are a couple of statements direct from viewers.

“I happen to be one of tenncare drops, I live outside Clarksville TN. and don’t get cable tv out in the country. I would like to purchase a copy of your video to show in the neighborhood the real story, I have had eleven heart attacks, and diabeties, and can’t get insurance. I have part D medicare, but won’t be able to buy medicine because of the donut hole in the plan it will be to expenceive .Anyway will you please contact me if your video is for sale. “

I am so happy that someone had the balls to produce such a documentary.?Ǭ† I have MS.?Ǭ† I was cut from Tenncare last year.?Ǭ† My shots/injections cost $300 per week.?Ǭ† I guess Tenncare thought I would be too costly.”

There you have it. It’s heartbreaking to hear testimonies such as these but it’s encouraging to again be made to realize how much power and responsibility documentarians have to cut to the heart of such matters. A few more filmmakers out there like Molly and we’ll?Ǭ† all be a step closer to a better world. I can’t encourage you enough to seek out Molly’s film either on the channel or in our online store at www.documentarychannel.com.

Docs in The City

Docs, Dating, and Life in Any City

My mission as a single 20 something documentary aficionado is to relate docs and the whole doc experience realistically to others and integrate it into our social scene.?Ǭ† I love watching documentaries and want to get reviews and info on not only the types of docs that I would personally enjoy but films I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll be able to enjoy with others.?Ǭ† Nothing is better than watching a gritty doc with my friends at home over dinner and drinks and catching up or taking that special someone to a movie we can both enjoy.
Awkward first date? Take him or her to a doc at your local theater and chat about it over coffee afterwards.?Ǭ† Family in town and need something you can all agree on??Ǭ† Treat them to a doc at a theater or save time for one on the channel.?Ǭ† Independent film festivals hit almost every major city and can be great events to see and be seen, plus catch docs that might never see a wide release.
Real world stories that make docs so unique are more relatable to the average Joe or Jane than outlandish Hollywood blockbusters; plus I personally love gossip and docs are the ultimate form.?Ǭ† Letting me know I am not alone or that the my life really is not that bad are some of the major pros of documentaries; not to mention their ability to highlight the beauty and struggles of the real world.
Every month I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll be bringing you reviews of docs both on the channel and in the theaters, helpful hints on how to enjoy docs and indie movies in your busy life, and monthly highlights of festivals and theaters. And those are just some of the features you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll find in Docs In The City. Most importantly I will try to highlight docs that will perk your interests, maybe not grandma and grandpa?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s, but films that will spark thought and appeal to your lifestyle.
Docs In The City will be a series of articles filled with all the helpful information that I track down in my constant search to find entertaining and informative documentary films. Hopefully, it will do the same for you. And I encourage you to write me at alaffer@documentarychannel.com to share your own doc-releated experiences and reviews as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you and sharing my experiences and reviews.
