Designated Hitter

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Hiya folks,

Chris here at Doc Channel HQ deep in the heart of Nashville. Just wanted to take a moment to point out that as of tomorrow it is officially “Sports Month,” here at the Documentary Channel. Now this may lose me a few brownie points with some of you but what I personally do not know about sports could fill a large body of water(possibly the largest body of water my geography skills also leave something to be desired). I don’t watch sports and my only real experience playing them was the three or so years I spent in YMCA basketball (might I add during this time I scored not one point, nor did I assist in the scoring of any points). Growing up I was the movie nerd in my family, and thank god they supported my dreams of one day being a filmmaker and being surrounded by movies or else that whole YMCA basketball thing might’ve extended a lot longer than was necessarily healthy. Why did I play basketball if I have had a life-long disinterest in sports? My dad of course. I don’t mean that in a he forced me into it kind of way. My father is a sports Journalist. My whole life he’s been covering organized sport of all kinds with a special love for golf and basketball. When I was born dad of course thought–as all father’s do–that I would follow in his footsteps and by the time I took my first steps I was equipped with liliputian equipment for damn near any sport I may have wanted to play. Over time dad would come to realize that though no one would ever accuse me of being an athlete, that my love for film was every bit as deep rooted as his love of college basketball. From that moment on Dad has always supported my film habit and I felt sports month was the perfect time to repay that kind favor. So with that said I’m happy to say that this weeks “From the Vault” column about “Hoop Dreams” was penned by none other than my pops. If you like the piece and are a fan of either college hoops or football Dad has got you covered. Just mosey over to www.blueribbonyearbook.com and check out the book that even the scouts can’t do without. So thanks dad and to our readers I hope you enjoy the piece.

Doc Till You Drop

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

If you’re one of the fine folks who has already browsed or better yet made a purchase from our online store than you have an idea how cool it is. What you may not be aware of is how cool it will become. The Doc Shop is a living breathing beast that will grow each week as we seek to fill it with all the best and brightest our medium of choice has to offer. Also, if you’re a filmmaker and you’ve submitted a film to us and you would like to take advantage of our store as a point of sale for your film we encourage you to contact us. There are lots of cool options to help you get your doc out to the widest possible audience so drop us a line and after you’ve done that feel free to max out your credit cards in the online store (you don’t need to pay off your student loans anyway). Take care.

Goodbye Girls

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Ok so the title of this blog is sort of a Neil Simon reference but it’s also my humble attempt to wish the lovely ladies who have dominated this months programming a fond farewell. That’s right my gentle blog reading friends, only one more week of women’s month and then it’s on to June where we’ll be showcasing more sports related docs than you can shake a hockey stick at (I know that’s only probably gonna be funny to me). So keep your dial tuned to DOC and remember to warm up so you don’t pull anything.

Can One Puff Marijuana With a Lozenge in the Mouth?

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

That my friends,(the title of this blog I mean) is my absolute favorite line from Susan Glover and Arthur Holden’s film “Philosopher Stoned,” which you’ve been hearing a lot about here lately if you’ve been paying attention to our website. In fact, the From The Vault article about the film is still up, and will soon have a permanent home on our archive page (along with our other great articles from weeks past). Equally exciting–possibly more exciting depending how you feel about my writing–is the fact that you can now purchase a copy of this film of your very own when you visit our online store. It’s available for the bargain basement price of $7.50 and is sure to be a hit at parties, family gatherings and Bar Mitzvahs. Not that you have to be throwing a party to enjoy the film but we suspect that you’ll want to show your friends after you’ve seen it. So check out the store for this great title and an ever-growing roster of equally entertaining documentaries. If you do decide to purchase the film we hope you’ll write in to our forum and let us know your thoughts we’re looking forward to hearing from you.
